Performance management is the procedure for creating a work place in which individuals are enabled to perform to the best of their skills. It is a application used by the organisations in developing and training their employees which in turn helps them better understand their obligations towards the company and conduct better. Performance Management System [PMS] was typically known Performance Appraisal System [PAS]. The evaluation system was used as a device of controlling employee through salary government, reward administration, promotion, and disciplinary activities. The appraisal reports had been confidential in nature plus the employees had been rated within the basis their traits. People Sector Banking institutions [PSBs] had an annual evaluation system that documented the past activities associated with an employee and rated these people on that basis. Minimum importance was given to future growth. The employee had simply no say in his/her appraisal. The appraisal took place in the time promotion with the employee and the promotion in the employee was based on the seniority and never on the performance. The evaluation system was mostly uniform in all general public sector banking companies. In recent times, many changes took place in the performance management system of these financial institutions. Many banks took steps to offer specialised teaching and knowledge sharing programs, incentives to get better performance, efficient performance appraisal, better campaign opportunities to suitable employees and creating better working environment. State Bank of India has an open approach to appraisal. Allahabad Bank has introduced a system that aims in assisting officers to spot their abilities and failings and motivate improvement of performance on the job.
